The poem plays on the image of minnesota as garrison keillor's land of lake woebegon — i.e., white. It's just a funny little haiku. And i think the impulse for literature comes from our need and desire to express what we know unconsciously, but we don't have the language to express. David mura was born in 1952 and grew up in chicago, the oldest of four children.
